From May 1-31, I’ll be part of a month-long project that is near and dear to my heart. I’m part of a group of twelve SFR and PNR authors who have banded together to raise awareness of ALS (Lou Gehrig’s Disease). All of us have pledged to donate a minimum of 25% of the May sales of our blue covered books to help support the ALS Association’s research for a cure for this heinous disease.
Why am I doing this? Five years ago, one of my cousins died from ALS. He was like a big brother to me, and I miss him every day. From the day of his diagnosis, I became involved with ALS Association fundraising events. The first year I arranged for my family to raise money through a walk-a-thon. Our team was small, but mighty. The following year we went from a team of walkers to a team of riders in the Napa Valley Ride for the Cure, and we've done the ride almost every year.
Currently, there is no cure for ALS. It’s a disease that slowly robs the victim of their motor skills. Simple things like walking, eating, talking, and eventually even breathing become impossible. Yet, all the while the victim’s mind is as sharp as ever. It’s like being trapped in your body with no way to communicate with your loved ones. The average life-span of a victim after diagnosis is 1-5 years. Like I said, heinous.
But, there is hope. Recent research has led to promising breakthroughs. Please help me and my colleagues support the ALSA in their search for a cure.
