We stayed at the same AirB&B cabin we were in last year. It's right across the street from a local lake, which wasn't super crowded because half the state's kids started school that week. (Timing is everything!)

One of the fun things the lake had going on was a hotdog stand, which was something we'd never seen there before and seemed a little odd given the place is in the middle of a forest. Our feelings were validated on the second day there when a bear decided to check out the delicious aromas coming from the cart. Don't worry, the furry dude was dissuaded by an airhorn-toting lifeguard, who chased him across the street and through the empty lot next to our cabin. Hopefully the video works for you. If not, then all I can say was that it was a pretty cool experience to witness... from the safety of our cabin's deck! (video credit Kid #5)
We saw other wildlife including gray squirrels, chipmunks, deer (so many deer!), a skunk, Stellar's jays, crows, geese, ducks, bats, and for the first time ever, a gray fox! During a hike at Lake Alpine, Mr. Kirk, Kid #1, & I saw a few bald eagles and heard a mountain lion chirping in a tree. (Good kitty...stay...staaay...)

Mountain Mamas Report: Once again, the Mountain Mamas were sidelined by an injury. This time my bestie, Trisha, had a bum knee, so we drove up the mountain to sit on the shore of Utica Lake and eat lunch. Unfortunately, the wasps decided we owed them some of our lunches as compensation for using beach space. One of the buggers let me know I wasn't complying to their demands fast enough by stinging me on my middle finger! Ungrateful!

Other things we did: Mr. Kirk & I got up very early one morning to do a 4 mile hike; spent a few nights star gazing and watched the Perseids meteor shower; learned to play disc golf & lost my disc in a swampy area full of reeds (sigh); played Bingo at the local Elks Club...and won two games; went to a car show, of course!
